On July 16th, 2018, in Rome, and in collaboration with the Center for American Progress, Volta organized a seminar to present the Italian translation of the paper “Europe’s Populist Challenge”.
The paper, written by Matt Browne (Center for American Progress), Dalibor Rohac (American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research) and Karolyn Kenney (Center for American Progress), examines the drivers of populist support, focusing first on the current state of play before endeavoring to understand the reasons for populism’s resurgence in Europe.
The report then offers a series of policy recommendations that policymakers can use to fight back. Although the jury is still out on which political strategies work in which contexts, reconnecting European voters with mainstream politics is a critical part of addressing the challenge that authoritarian populism poses.
